Gang Leader for a Day

Self-styled “rogue sociologist” Sudhir Venkatesh’s latest book, Gang Leader for a Day, tells the story of his relationship with a gang in Chicago’s infamous Robert Taylor housing project. Reading like a mashup of The Wire, a Pimms O’Clock ad, and Freakonomics, his account is by turns hilarious, fascinating and terrifying.

Blessed at Republic flashback

Blessed was now-melted Sheffield superclub Republic’s boozy cheapo student remix of their world famous Gatecrasher night. With Matt Hardwick in the main room and 99p vodka Red Bulls it was a Monday night staple for the valley boys in the late 90s and early 00s. I always seemed to end up in the top room throwing some shapes to DJ Jeff House’s oldskool set, and this week music blog Dilated Choonz took me back to those happy times with some fantastic piano anthems.

Earth Hour – EPIC FAIL

Earth Hour went global this week with cities around the world (including Chicago) turning off their lights for one hour in order to “clearly demonstrate in participating cities, the connection between energy usage and climate change”. Sadly one enterprising blogger (via the Freakonomics blog) has found that the reported drop in energy usage during the earth hour was preceeded by a large power spike as people prepared for the event. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
